Welcome Back – Farthing Wood Class have had a brilliant start back after half-term and it has been lovely to see all of the exciting things you have been up to over the holidays including carving your pumpkins!
In Phonics we have been learning the new phonemes ‘f’ and ‘l’. – I’m sure the children would love to show you the actions for the sounds. We have also been learning all about the digraphs (two letters that make one sound) ff, ll, and ss. The children recognised that these sounds only come at the end or in the middle of a word, never at the beginning. WE have been practising this and have been writing words such as fill, bell, huff, puff, mess and hiss. The children were incredibly proud of their letter formation as was I. They really are showing huge progress already this term and it’s only been a week!
We have started English this term and have been reading ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and learning all about the characters in the story and the sequence of important events. The children are fantastic at helping me tell the story out loud and next week they will be creating their own version.
In Maths we have been investigating the numbers 1, 2 and 3. We have linked these numerals to CBeebies Numberblocks which the children have loved. The children have been learning to make the numbers in different ways and have been making collections of 1, 2 and 3. They have been introduced to subitising. Subitising is when we look at a group of objects and know how many there are without counting. The children have been practising subitising through memory games.
In Topic we recapped our school rules and JONK characters and why it is important to use these during our learning. We learnt about Halloween, how and why we celebrate Bonfire Night and how to keep safe when watching firework displays or using sparklers – surprisingly a carrot is very useful, just pop the sparkler in the end and then give it to the children to hold, also if you light it at the bottom first it will burn away from the child! We looked at the story of the Gunpowder Plot and the children had lots of questions! We talked about how there were no cameras or movies from 400 years ago so we can only see what these people were like in paintings.
This Half term we will embark on ‘Welly Walks’ on Friday afternoons – whatever the weather! Please ensure you send wellies and waterproofs with your child to keep in their locker at school.
We love to see what adventures your child gets up to at home – clubs they attend , baking, reading, making dens, being creative, going on nature walks. Tapestry is a wonderful place to share these with us and the class – please upload your photos and a brief description so we can share these together during circle time.
