Farthing Wood Class update

It’s been wonderful to see all the children back again after half-term. They have had an amazing week of learning and have planted our sunflower seeds ready to watch them grow – I wonder who’s will be the tallest?!
We have been recapping our School Rules along with our JONK characters and the Colour Monster. The children love our JONK characters and know that each one of them will help with their learning when they experience the Joy of Not Knowing (JONK). The learning skills they help us with are; resilience, collaboration, resourcefulness, creative, reflective and curious. Our Colour Monsters support us with our emotions, the children know that it’s ok to experience all the ‘big’ emotions but it is what we do with those emotions that is important.
In Phonics we have recapped all our sounds learnt so far – phew there are so many!! We have introduced the Tricky Witch digraph ‘er’ as in boxer, summer, better, fitter and hammer. The children have loved doing the action for this sound and we have learnt all about Tricky Witch as well as her Black Cats!
In English we have continued with ‘Drawing Club’ this week and have been reading the story Room on a Broom. We have drawn the Dragon, the swamp, a super fast broomstick for the witch and animals we would like to take on our own broomstick. The children have the most fantastic imagination and used their Monster Phonics knowledge and wrote the most wonderful descriptive sentences explaining what they have drawn!
In Maths we have begun a new phase called ‘Building 9 and 10’. We have been busy this week looking at the composition (one number can be made up from (composed from) two or more smaller numbers) of 9 and 10 using 10 frames, strawberries and black dots! We discovered there are lots of different ways to make 9 and 10. Ask your child if they can share what they know with you at home.
We have begun our new Topic – Past & Present. Over this term we will be trying to answer our key enquiry question ‘Does the past have an impact on our future?’ using the key concepts – opportunities and happiness.
We recapped people in our families and what makes us unique. We have learnt our new vocabulary for this topic – ‘happiness’ and ‘opportunities’. We have looked at significant events in the children’s lives – being born, walking, first birthday and going to school and have put them in chronological order. We have begun to look at our favourite toys and what electronics we have in our homes and how they help us.

Please remember that PE is on a Monday and we expect children to come into School wearing their PE kit – a letter reminding you of the correct PE kit has been sent home.
Please ensure you send wellies and waterproofs with your child to keep in their locker at school.
Please remember to send your child’s Handwriting Homework Book back on a Monday – thank you.
We love to see what adventures your child gets up to at home – clubs they attend , baking, reading, making dens, being creative, going on nature walks. Tapestry is a wonderful place to share these with us and the class – please upload your photos and a brief description so we can share these together during circle time.
