Farthing Wood Class update

Another busy week in Farthing Wood class and the children have shown real resilience and curiosity whilst exploring new concepts and ideas during JONK time.
In Phonics we have introduced the digraph ‘ai’ as in pain, rain, main, aim and snail. The children have loved doing the action for this sound and we have learnt all about Angry Red A. The children have been busy using their phonics knowledge to decode words and write ‘ai’ words on a phoneme frame remembering that a and i stay together. Rain – written as r-ai-n.
In English we have started ‘Drawing Club’ – this week’s book is Mr Wolf’s Pancakes. The children were invited in small groups to ‘Drawing Club’ with Mrs Betts and had to draw Mr Wolf or another character from the story and then write about them. The children used their Monster Phonics knowledge and wrote the most amazing descriptive writing – they should be very proud of themselves!
In Maths we have begun a new phase called ‘Growing 6, 7 and 8’. We have been busy this week looking at the composition (one number can be made up from (composed from) two or more smaller numbers) of 6, 7 and 8 using dominos and ladybirds. We discovered there are lots of different ways to make 6, 7 and 8! Ask your child if they can share what they know with you at home.
In Topic we have learnt all about celebrations – New Years Eve and Lunar New Year. We looked at similarities and differences in how they are celebrated around the world. We learnt all about the Chinese Zodiac and the story of the animals crossing the river – the poor cat didn’t get a year named after them, I wonder if your child can tell you why?
We continued to explore colour mixing and used red and yellow to create shadow pictures of Chinese Dragons – the children were so excited to mix the colours together to create a new colour Orange!! They look amazing and are on display in the classroom. We havealso been busy making chinese laterns using our fine motor skills to snip into the paper.

We would love the children to bring in a photo of their home so that we can have an interactive display within the Classroom. These can be emailed to me or the office. Everyone has been really excited to tell us about their homes and who belongs in them. We have learnt that all families are different and this is part of our identity and our sense of belonging – thank you to those who have already emailed them to me.

Please remember that PE is on a Monday and we expect children to come into School wearing their PE kit – a letter reminding you of the correct PE kit has been sent home.
Please ensure you send wellies and waterproofs with your child to keep in their locker at school.
Please remember to send your child’s Handwriting Homework Book back on a Monday – thank you.
We love to see what adventures your child gets up to at home – clubs they attend , baking, reading, making dens, being creative, going on nature walks. Tapestry is a wonderful place to share these with us and the class – please upload your photos and a brief description so we can share these together during circle time.
