Welcome to Ruby Bridges Class! We are a mixed class of Reception and Year 1 children. We are taught by Mrs Steers (Monday to Thursday) and Miss Howett (Friday). We have three wonderful TA’s in our class; Mrs Betts, Mrs Farrow and Mrs McGuire.
We are awesome children who aspire to achieve together because ‘together we are stronger’. We learn through a mix of child initiated and adult led learning.
This year, our class is named after Ruby Bridges.
Ruby Nell Bridges Hall (born September 8, 1954) was the first African-American child (at the tender age of 6) to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis on 14 November 1960.
Ruby still lives in New Orleans. She runs the Ruby Bridges Foundation to help troubled children at William Frantz and other schools. ... Today, Ruby Bridges continues to live in New Orleans and works in schools around the country to promote education.
|This week in Ruby Bridges we have started Monster Phonics. Reception children have learnt the sounds s, a, t and p. We have learnt to read the words a and at. We have also focused on initial sounds e.g. pirate starts with a ‘p’. Year 1 children have focused on letter formation, letter families and applying this into words and sentences. In Maths we have focused on what is the same, what is different, finding the odd one out, sorting and grouping objects. Year 1 has been counting slowly and reliably and finding the corresponding number. We have talked about school council and discussed who would like to be on the school council, we then held a class vote. The results will be announced shortly. It has been another fantastic week well done everyone! |
Year 1 – Remember PE kit on Wednesday.
We will hear your child read on Tuesdays now that we are doing PE on Wednesday.
Reception PE will start after October half term, details to follow. We will hear your child read on Wednesdays.
WOW….what a fantastic first full week with all our super Year 1s and brand new Reception children. The Year 1s have shown great kindness and support to the younger children, reminding them of the school rules and much more. We have been busy learning new routines, different layouts and how to find everything we need. We have spent time learning about Ruby Bridges and why she was and still is so important. We have also focused on the six JONK characters that are so important to our learning. Next week we will start Reception and Year 1 Monster Phonics. PE will start for Year 1s on Wednesdays (please come into school in your PE kit). We will let Reception parents know a few weeks before we start the Reception PE.
Well done to everyone for a thoroughly enjoyable week, you have been amazing!
