Attenborough Class update

We were so excited to welcome the children back this term. It has been lovely to hear about the wonderful things they have been doing over Easter especially the nature scavenger hunt – I hope you all enjoyed it!
In phonics we have introduced the children to CVCC words (Consonant, Vowel, Consonant, Consonant) such as limp, pond, soft, hand. The children have been amazing at recognising the vowels and consonants in each word. We then had a go at creating CVCC flashcard families. Children had to take a word, sink for example and think of words that rhyme with it and create new flashcards by changing the initial (first) sound – sink – pink – link – wink – rink. Although they found it a challenge at first they were really resilient and came up with the most amazing CVCC families.
In English we have continued with ‘Drawing Club’ this week and have been reading the story ‘Penguin’ by Polly Dunbar. The children really liked the character of the Penguin. We have drawn where the Lion might live, thought about what else the Lion could eat and how we could rescue the Penguin from the Lion’s tummy! The children have the most fantastic imagination and used their Monster Phonics knowledge and wrote the most wonderful descriptive sentences explaining what they have drawn!
In Maths we have started a new phase called ‘To 20 and Beyond’. We have been exploring how numbers 11 to 20 are made. We use the sentence one whole ten and ? more to allow the children to fully understand the concept of numbers bigger than ten. For example 11 is 1 whole ten and 1 more, 15 is 1 whole ten and 5 more, 19 is 1 whole ten and 9 more. The children have really excelled with this and we have had great fun playing Bingo recognising those numbers.
We have started a new Topic this term called ‘Growing’. Our key enquiry question is ‘What do we need to grow?’ and our two key concepts are ‘Care and Love’. We will spend this term trying to answer our question by spending time outside and exploring our environment. This week we have recapped our emotions – what they are and how they make us feel, we recapped our school rules and we have looked at our JONK characters to remind ourselves of their qualities and strengths. The children have loved scanning the QR codes to watch a video on how to create the characters – we have had some amazing animals, the children are very creative!
Please could you ensure your child brings Wellies with them on a Wednesday as they will go out whatever the weather.
We love to see what adventures your child gets up to at home – clubs they attend , baking, reading, making dens, being creative, going on nature walks. Tapestry is a wonderful place to share these with us and the class – please upload your photos and a brief description so we can share these together during circle time.
