Narnia Class update

Welcome back for the Summer Term, Narnia Class! This week is our Personal Development week at MIJS, and we have been focusing on PSHE, RE and Science as well as being introduced to our new Topic for the term: ‘Infinity and Beyond’, which is all about Space! In PSHE, we have been learning about things that can go into or onto people bodies that can make them feel good or not good, such as different foods, drinks and medicines, and in RE we have been learning about how Jewish people celebrate the festival of Passover. In Science, we have been learning about what plants need to grow and have even been doing a bit of gardening! We have also been on a walk around the school to explore the different types of deciduous and coniferous trees on our grounds. In Topic, we have been learning that the furthest man has ever been in space is to the moon (a distance of around 240,000 miles!) and that there are 8 planets in our Solar System. Feel free to quiz us on their names at home!

We have finally made it to the last week of the term and we are all very much ready for the break! This week we have been winding down for the term, continuing our stories based on the book, The Koala Who Could. We have been looking at multiplication, discovering that when you swap around the two factors in a multiplication equation, the answer stays the same! In Topic, we have had an art week. We have been learning the primary and secondary colours and how to make tints and shades of the same colour by adding black or white. We have been using these skills to create our own coral reef paintings filled with sea creatures! We hope you all have a wonderful Easter break and look forward to welcoming you back in the Summer Term.

We have had yet another fantastic week in Narnia class! In English, we have been studying the book ‘The Koala Who Could’, about a little koala that feels too scared to leave his tree until he finally overcomes his fears. We have been practising writing questions and answers as part of our learning and are making great improvements in understanding where a question mark is needed. In Maths, we have been practising our 2, 5 and 10 times table – please feel free to practise with us at home so that we can become more automatic in remembering these! In Topic, we have been focussing on art, in particular sculpture. We have been practising skills for sculpting clay and have been making our very own Australian animal sculptures! Thank you to all those who attended the parents’ evenings – I’m sure you’ll agree that we are doing a super job in Year 2 and we are all very proud of how far we’ve come so far this year.

Welcome back Narnia Class! We hope everyone enjoyed their half term. This week is our ‘Personal Development’ week, so we have been busy with our R.E. and P.S.H.E. lessons. For PSHE, we have been learning all about money, including how people earn it, what it is for and how to spend and save it. At the start of the week, we had a visitor from HSBC bank who talked to us about how money works. We also turned the classroom into Mrs Pettifer-Saunders’ toy shop and we could buy things from the shop using money from our purses! In R.E., we have been learning about Judaism and how Jewish people use a tzedakah box to collect money to give to charity. The money is often spent on food and clothes for people who need it. In English, we have continued with our wombat theme, this time writing information texts filled with fun wombat facts!

This week in English, we have continued to write a diary from the viewpoint of Wombat, who spends most of his time snoozing, digging holes and stealing food from humans! In Maths, we have begun a new unit on multiplication and have been busy grouping objects into equal and unequal groups and drawing arrays. In Topic, we have had a week of music and computing, and have been learning about what rhythmn and tempo mean. We have also been using Google Chrome Lab to create our own musical compositions.

We’ve had a really lovely week in Year 2 and have been getting really creative, making our own aboriginal art-inspired paintings! In English, we started a new story which is a diary written from the perspective of a little wombat who loves to sleep and eat carrots! We have really been pushing ourselves to use different adjectives to making our writing as descriptive and interesting as possible. In Maths, we have been practicing our subtraction crossing ten (using exchanging) and doing some problem-solving using money. We are getting much better and being able to recognise the value of different coins. Thank you to all parents that have been reading regularly with your children at home – it really makes such a difference to developing comprehension skills, which is a huge part of our learning at the moment!

Happy New Year, everyone! Our new year has started off brilliantly as we have all settled back into school and are ready for the new term. Our Topic this term is called ‘Way Down Under’ and is all about Australia. We will be learning about everything from the climate, landscape and history of Australia, to some of the weird and wonderful creatures that live there! We have begun a new story in English (‘Ossiri and the Bala Mengro’, by Richard O’Neill and Katharine Quarmby) which tells the story of a little girl living in Australia. We have also been using our previous learning about maps and continents to locate and compare Australia and Alice Springs. We have sent home knowledge organisers for this topic if you would like to find out more about what we will be learning, and homework for this topic has also been sent home. In Maths, we are practicing finding the difference between two numbers. What a busy week our first week back has been!
